One of the most important components of the PTA consists of its nearly 30 Standing Committees. These Committees are responsible for a range of activities and serve both to support our school and to facilitate various school events/programs. Each committee requires a different amount of time and a different type of involvement. Chances are high that there is one that coincides with an interest of yours. Joining a committee is an enjoyable way to connect with like-minded parents in our school, while helping to make your child's education a better one. Below is a list of the committees along with a brief description of their activities. Chairperson(s) contact information can be found on MSCNet.
Annual Appeal: Each fall, our Annual Appeal Committee, raises money for all of MSC's programs, including Teacher's College, Math in the City and Lincoln Center. One lovely evening is organized by parents on this committee to dedicate making calls to all the MSC parents in our community. This evening usually is an excellent opportunity to meet other working parents! There are also other volunteer opportunities to assist with a mailing to all families and staff a donation table in the lobby.
Winter Ball: This spectacular weekend evening gala needs many volunteers starting in early November to help with the event which includes decoration, set up, service, break down, etc. This is a night for adults only and takes place off premises. We especially welcome parents with connections in the catering or party industry and those with previous event experience. The Earth Ball is a fun, social event - and volunteering to help is a great opportunity to meet other MSC families!
Winter Auction: One of our largest MSC fundraising events! We host an online auction that runs for approximately two weeks and planning begins long before the Earth Ball and ends just after the event. We host a live auction and a silent auction at the Earth Ball each year. Other fundraising aspects of the auction include an advertising journal, sponsorship opportunities, a silent auction of class art projects, flowers of fortune, heads or tails game and more. We need volunteers to solicit everything from donations from local businesses, ads for the auction journal, and sponsorship opportunities. Volunteers are also needed to coordinate your child's class art project, data entry and/or editing descriptions of auction items, technical expertise, publicity, general organization/distribution, and much more.
Science Fair: This annual school-wide, Springtime event needs parents to help set up and run the fair which takes place on a Saturday in May. We also need help with t-shirt and bake sales at the event.
Uptown County Fair: Another Spring event and the 1st Saturday in June is our largest community-building outdoor event of the school year! Be part of this committee that plans the Uptown County Fair. There are many different sub-committees to get involved in: Food, The UCF/MSC Thrift Store, Decorating, Set-up & Breakdown, Entertainment, Bake Sales, Children’s Games, Rides and Activities, Security, Arts and Crafts, Raffle Sales, plus more!
Scholastic Book Fair: This event truly reflects our community's strong interest in reading and in books. Parents organize and run this event, which takes place during school hours.
Bake Sales: These are held several times throughout the year. Parents bring in the bakes good to parent volunteers who run the sale. Generally, they take place after school, on some half day Fridays and at some MSC events. Healthy foods are encouraged!
Parent Outreach: Help new families (K-8) settle in at MSC! Here's a a few examples: Greet new families at the Spring Fair, speak with new families throughout the summer, organize and host a new family playdate before the start of the school year, organize and host the first-day-of-school coffee/nosh, or work with 6th-8th grade parents and teachers to come up with ways to welcome the new or incoming 6th grade families.
Grandparents & Special Friends Day: Now an MSC tradition! Each November, MSC opens it doors for a special welcome for grandparents and special friends to spend a morning in the classroom with their child(ren). Volunteers needed to help organize/publicize this one day event, welcome/register guests, serve food and provide direction to the classrooms the day of the event.
Grant Writing: We are seeking parents who have experience in grant writing, research, identify and create grants to fund various school-wide projects/activities.
Greenhouse Committee: Volunteers needed to assist with maintaining our Greenhouse. Shakira, our Greenhouse teacher, can always use the assistance!
Book Room Committee: A brand-new, entirely volunteer-run resource, the MSC Book Room will offer an extensive collection of "leveled" fiction, non-fiction, picture and resource materials to our K - 8th grade students. Volunteers are needed to shelve, organize and "level" books as well as to coordinate with teachers to get the right books into the classroom.
K-8 Outreach and Support: MSC is a thriving K-8 community. This committee will create events that will help bring our entire community together throughout the year.
Techology/MSCNet: Looking for volunteers with graphic design or WordPress experience who are interested in helping us maintain our school web sites. Upkeep, innovation and oversight of MSCNet. Greater Giving Online Payments experience needed. Create our online payments pages for the MSC Annual Appeal, After School tuition and our MSC Auction. Time commitment is minimal, and at your convenience.
Special Events: These fundraising events take place throughout the year and are intended to build community. Certain events take place at MSC (Family Movie Night, Family Fitness Night and more), others take place in different venues (past examples include Jazz at the Underground, Family Mountain Biking, Night of a Thousand Laughs and more). Events can be intended for families or for adults.
Recess: Supervise playground activities in K-8 throughout the year. Please join our children as often as you wish!
Communications/ Newsletter: The newsletter comes out every six weeks and is entirely written, edited and published by our talented parents. If you can write and take photos, your help is much appreciated. Working parents can write on their own time and help with one issue or every issue.
Wellness/Green Committee: This committee includes terra cycling program, CSA, Family Fitness Nights and other events.
